Sunnier days at last!

It has been a glorious week in terms of the weather, but it has also been a very challenging week at FPJS due to spike in covid cases- with a significant number of staff off. However, we have pulled from every available source to ensure we have continued with our normal learning plans as much as possible- Cormorant class have enjoyed myself and Mr Wallace teaching them at times during the week! Thanks to all parents for their support on this.

And another thank you to parents- our survey that many of you had a chance to fill in at the recent parent evening gives us very encouraging responses and some interesting feedback. We will share this with you in due course. If you did not have a chance to fill this out, our survey will be open until the end of this term. Please do tell us your honest opinions so that we can make any tweaks and improvements to be the best we can be- the link is below.

Please look ahead in the newsletter to our FPSA section which shows an update on how much money has been raised and what we have spent the money on in the last year- once again they have done a fabulous job in difficult circumstances to raise much needed additional funds for the school. Without such funding, your children would not have the brilliant resources that enhance their learning.

Finally, do enjoy our newsletter which once again shows some of the brilliant things that have happened here in the last two weeks- including a very "talented" performance by our staff being team Freddie! Hopefully this will make you smile.

Swimarathon award 2022

Congratulations to all of the children involved in the swimarathon 2022 this year. Last week, some of the participants involved attended the Lion's Award Ceremony to collect the President's Award for the team at the Swimarathon epitomising the spirit and ethos of the event. We are truly honoured that FPJS has been given such recognition, after raising a phenomenal £2051.25 back in January. Of course, this would not have been possible without everything being organised by parent, Julie Parkinson- so huge credit to Julie!

The children were presented the award by Jeanette Chippington, an inspirational Paralympic swimmer and paracanoeist. Jeanette is an outstanding Paralympic athlete having competed as a swimmer at five consecutive Paralympic Games; Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens, winning a total of 12 medals before making a return to international sport at Rio 2016 in the new sport of Para canoe. Atlanta was her most successful games where she won 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals and broke two World Records.

Y4 ROAD Safety workshop

Imogen Leonard, the Road Safety Officer from RBWM came to visit us on Thursday 17th March. Imogen talked the year 4 children through many different road safety risks that they may encounter. The children learnt that 135cm is the legal height to be out of a car seat. All the children were then measured to see what height they were. She also shared Alfie's story and the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling or scooting. Alfie didn't and had to recover in hospital. After having Imogen in to speak with us, we hope that our year 4 children will be following the Green Cross Code when crossing roads, wearing their seat belt in the car and always wearing a helmet when cycling or scooting!

Y3 Pizza Making

Year 3 had the most fantastic time making pizzas this week! We started off by designing our own boxes and packaging, then tasted a selection of pizzas and toppings to see what we liked best before making our own and evaluating the final products.

Damon said "My favourite part was placing the toppings on the top. My favourite topping was pepperoni and sweetcorn but I didn't like the olives because they were too salty."

and

Celine said "I loved everything apart from the cheese! But do I love Margherita!"

Year Group Updates

Year 3 News

What an exciting few weeks it’s been in Year 3!

Last week, we turned the hall into a giant pizzeria and made our own delicious pizzas as part of our technology learning. The children learned about food hygiene and safety, using a knife to cut their desired toppings, a grater to grate cheese for their pizza and rolling out to the desired shape and size. We then moved on to evaluating our pizzas considering what we might do differently in the future.

In topic, we’ve been continuing to learn about the Roman invasion of Britain, considering how this invasion changed life for the Celts. We’re looking forward to our trip to Ufton Court next half term to learn a bit more about this! Our science lessons have seen us exploring the Antarctic, conducting exciting experiments to understand insulation for both humans and animals!

In our English lessons, we have been writing a sequel to the wordless picture book Journey. We loved exploring the imaginative worlds the main character created and look forward to writing about our own.

What a fantastic half term it’s been!

Mrs Lawrence-Davis Y3 Team Leader

Year 3- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

What does insulate mean? Which material was the best insulator?

Tell me about your pizza. What toppings did you choose and why?

How are Roman roads made and what difference did they make in Britain?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y3...

Below are some of the texts that Year 3 have been enjoying as part of their comprehension lessons and for pleasure:

Journey – Arron Becker

Roman Mysteries – Caroline Lawrence

Poles Apart! – Jeanne Willis

Year 4 News

It has been a fun filled couple of weeks in year 4 with talent show auditions, the Comical Relief talent show finals, a road safety workshop and making salt dough animals!

In English, we finished our spooky stories; marking them may give the teachers nightmares for weeks! We have now moved onto report writing and are linking this with our science topic about animals and their habitats. So far, the children have created an animal out of salt dough and have been thinking about what adaptations it has to its environment. We will be writing up information about our animal to create a class encyclopaedia all about our wonderful creations!

Our fractions and decimals topic has come to an end in maths. Year 4 have shown such excellent perseverance through some tricky concepts in this topic. This week, as we edge closer to the year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, we have had another focus on learning our times tables. Keep up the hard work on TTRS, year 4, this is really helping you!

Keep up the hard work, year 4!

Mrs Barbosa, Y4 Team Leader

Year 4- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

How can you find out if two fractions are equivalent?

Name some features of a river.

What are the differences between reptiles and amphibians?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y4...

Below are some of the books that Year 4 have been enjoying, as part of their book talk lessons and for pleasure!

Kaspar Prince of Cats - Michael Morpurgo

The Lost Spells - Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris

The Humans - Jonny Marx and Charlie Davis

Year 5 News

In Year 5, we are now full steam ahead with our rehearsals for a Midsummer Night's Dream and very much looking forward to our upcoming performances. The children are doing a great job of learning their lines and understanding the language.

Meanwhile, in science we have had lots of fun making and throwing paper aeroplanes, all in order to develop our understanding of working scientifically. The children have been learning about variables and the importance of carrying out a fair test in order to gain valid data. This is leading us to the children designing their own science experiments over the coming weeks showing all of the learning they have achieved so far this term.

Almost as if it were planned, in maths we are have been working on our understanding of data and statistics. Learning how to analyse line graphs has been the main focus of our learning. We will then be using this to help us analyse the data from our science experiments.

Another exciting few weeks lie ahead as we look forward to our Shakespearian performances. We hope to see you there!

Miss Moakes, Y5 Team Leader

Year 5- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

In a science experiment, what is the difference between the dependent and independent variable?

How do Lysander's feelings change in a Midsummer Night's Dream?

How is a line graph different to a bar chart?

our current reads we are enjoying in Y5...

The Year 5 children would like to recommend the following books:

Illustrated Stories from Shakespeare by Lesley Sims

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Wonder by R J Palacio

Year 6 News

Are we ready for adventure in outer space ? Well hold on to you light sabres as we go all out Star Warts - yes this year's summer production has been announced. We cannot wait to see who will take the part of Daft Ada and Toby Wonky Nosebleed. If you have yet to sample the delights of the original Star Wars film (really- where have you been?!) then we suggest to truly enjoy the outstandingly funny jokes this year you need to settle down to watch it before July. We have started the auditions and were pleased to see how many children tried out for singing parts.

Why is the obtuse angle always sad? Because it isn't right! The old jokes are the best and it has been all about the angles in year 6 this week as we have been learning how to draw, measure and work out missing angles.

How does you body get oxygenated blood and what happens then? Stop and think about it as most people get it wrong when asked to explain. However, year 6 have been learning all about circulation and should be able to tell you what actually happens and the common misconception that it is a single loop ! Their knowledge is being put to the test as they produce learning resources using apps of their choice. Watch out for the results on Seesaw very soon.

Y6 have also been working very hard on their technology projects- learning all about cams- as you can see from the pictures!

Miss Johnson- Y6 Team Leader

Year 6- What are we learning?

What is the purpose of a leaflet?

How does our circulatory system work?

What do you have to remember when drawing or measuring angles?

our current reads we are enjoying in Y6...

The Secret of Splint Hall - Katie Cotton

Perfectly Weird , Perfectly You - Camilla Pang

Sports Update

PE News!

Well where to start over the last two weeks in PE? With a wonderful but strange turn of weather events, we have now started to use our big school playing field to develop the children's physical activity and knowledge for different sports. Some classes have worked on dance this term, where they have been looking to create sequences, patterns and movement to a variety of topics. Also as the sun has been shining, a lot of classes have participated in football sessions this week. Plenty of passing and dribbling skills were used during each lesson, as well as high intensity warm up games which mainly developed how we should communicate in sport and help one another with great teamwork. May we continue to have such wonderful weather in the upcoming weeks as we will be continuing with football and outdoor games to finish off the spring term.

Year 5/6 Hockey competition

On Wednesday 16th March Furze Platt went over to Altwood School to compete in the return of the schools sport partnership Year 5/6 Hockey competition. Usually FP find this particular tournament very challenging as there are many teams that compete to make a place into the final 2 teams. After having a wonderful group stage of matches, where we won 3, drew 1 and lost 1, FP found themselves progress into the semi finals to try and earn a place in the 2022 final. The semi final saw us face a tough opponent in Cookham Rise, where we narrowly came out on top and defeated them with great team play and pure hard work. Indeed this then meant we had a place in the FINAL! After a breathtaking team performance the match ended up being a draw, which was a fair result for both teams. This then meant as the competition was a County Qualifier both finalists progressed into the COUNTY FINALS, which will take place next week (29th March) at Bisham Abbey Sports Centre. Mr Kemp and Mrs Tisshaw are so incredibly proud of all the pupils who took part in what was a wet, rainy, and simply tough competition to be part of against 13 other local school teams. WELL DONE TEAM!! We now look forward to see how we get on at the county finals next week.
